Se p 20 04 A flash in the dark : UVES / VLT high resolution spectroscopy of GRB afterglows
نویسنده
چکیده
We present the first high resolution (R=20000–45000, corresponding to 14 km/s at 4200Å to 6.6 km/s at 9000Å ) observations of the optical afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts. GRB020813 and GRB021004 were observed by UVES@VLT 22.19 hours and 13.52 hours after the trigger, respectively. These spectra show that the inter–stellar matter of the GRB host galaxies is complex, with many components contributing to each main absorption system, and spanning a total velocity range of up to about 3000 km/s. Several narrow components are resolved down to a width of a few tens of km/s. In the case of GRB021004 we detected both low and high ionization lines, which allows rather strong constraints on the gas ionization parameter of the various components to be derived. Combined with photoionization results obtained with CLOUDY the ionization parameters appear to lie in a relatively small range, with no Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, ESO, the VLT/Kueyen telescope, Paranal, Chile, in the framework of programs 69.A–0516(B) and 70.A–0599(B)

متن کاملUVES-VLT High Resolution Spectroscopy of GRB080319B and GRB080330 Afterglows
We study here the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) environment through the analysis of the optical absorption features due to the gas surrounding the GRB. In particular, we analyze high resolution spectroscopic observations of GRB080319B and GRB080330 taken with UVES at the VLT, starting 8m30s and 1.5hr after the GRB trigger, respectively. The spectra show that the ISM of the GRB host galaxies are complex...
متن کاملPhysical conditions in high - redshift GRB - DLA absorbers observed with VLT / UVES : Implications for molecular hydrogen searches ⋆
Aims. We aim to understand the nature of the absorbing neutral gas in the galaxies hosting high-redshift long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and to determine their physical conditions. Methods. A detailed analysis of high-quality VLT/UVES spectra of the optical afterglow of GRB 050730 and other Swift-era bursts is presented. Results. We report the detection of a significant number of previous...
متن کاملThe nature of the dwarf starforming galaxy associated with GRB 060218 / SN 2006 aj ⋆
Context. We present high resolution VLT UVES and low resolution FORS optical spectroscopy of supernova 2006aj and its host galaxy, associated with the nearby (z = 0.03342) gamma-ray burst GRB 060218. This host galaxy is a unique case, as it is one of the few nearby GRB host galaxies known, and it is only the second time high resolution spectra have been taken of a nearby GRB host galaxy (after ...
متن کاملScientific Highlights of the HETE-2 Mission
The HETE-2 mission has been highly productive. It has observed more than 250 GRBs so far. It is currently localizing 25 30 GRBs per year, and has localized 43 GRBs to date. Twenty-one of these localizations have led to the detection of X-ray, optical, or radio afterglows, and as of now, 11 of the bursts with afterglows have redshift determinations. HETE-2 has also observed more than 45 bursts f...
